# Sir James Montgomery — The Ladies Lindores character guide

> Sir James Montgomery in The Ladies Lindores by Margaret Oliphant.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Old Sir James, Jamie

**First appearance:** 0001-the-ladies-lindores

## Snapshot

An old soldier and county gentleman whose bluff, warm-hearted loyalty to John Erskine survives every rumor the neighborhood can throw at him.

## Who they are

Sir James Montgomery belongs to the older generation of local gentry, the sort who remembers John's father and grandfather and refuses to let a scandal erase that history. His wife's stubborn 'Hoots, nonsense!' and his own soldier's pride make him a steady ally when John is most isolated, even if his advice leans toward enduring hardship rather than escaping it. He represents the county's better instincts, and his willingness to stand bail shows what friendship still means in a place ruled by reputation.
