# Mr. Torrance of Tinto — The Ladies Lindores character guide

> Mr. Torrance of Tinto in The Ladies Lindores by Margaret Oliphant.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Tinto, Torrance of Tinto

**First appearance:** 0001-the-ladies-lindores

## Snapshot

A coarse, horsey laird whose railway fortune and grandiose house cannot disguise the rude yeoman beneath the polished surface.

## Who they are

Mr. Torrance of Tinto inherited wealth amassed by a railway contractor father-in-law and a mother with Medici-scale ambitions, leaving him master of a palace he barely understands. Bored by the pictures and porcelain his mother accumulated, he remains a sportsman at soul, more at home with dogs than with the society his money has bought him. His marriage to Lady Caroline thrusts this uneasy mismatch of rank and roughness into the foreground of the Lindores family's fortunes, making him a quiet engine of the novel's social tensions.
