Concepts
Ideas that structure The Kingdom of God Is Within You by Leo Tolstoy — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Nonresistance to Evil
The central theme of the book, arguing that Christ's commandment to not resist evil is the core of Christian teaching, and that all violence, including war and state coercion, is incompatible with true Christianity.
Critique of Church and State
Tolstoy condemns both organized Christianity and state institutions for distorting Christ's teachings, using violence, and creating a hypocritical system that justifies oppression, war, and social injustice.
True Christianity vs. Pagan Life-Conception
The book contrasts the 'divine life-conception' based on love, truth, and service to God with the 'social/pagan life-conception' based on personal gratification, national glory, and state power, arguing humanity must transition to the former.
Freedom from Human Power
A Christian, by recognizing only God's law of love, achieves true freedom and cannot be compelled by any human authority to commit acts contrary to conscience, such as military service or violence.
Hypocrisy of Society
Tolstoy exposes the widespread hypocrisy in society, where individuals and institutions profess Christian values while actively participating in systems of oppression, violence, and exploitation, often rationalizing their actions.
The Kingdom of God Within
The kingdom of God is not an external institution or future event, but an inner state of spiritual perfection and alignment with divine truth, achieved through individual moral transformation and nonresistance.
Inevitability of Moral Progress
Humanity is undergoing an inevitable historical transition from a pagan, social life-conception to a higher, Christian one, driven by both spiritual awakening and the unbearable contradictions of the old order.
