## Who they are

Wipunen is the ancient singer-sage buried deep in the underworld, a vast corpse whose body has grown into the landscape, and the only source of the three words Wainamoinen lacks to complete his boat. When the old enchanter comes seeking them, Wipunen swallows him whole, and Wainamoinen must torment the giant from inside until he agrees to sing his hoard of songs. His reluctant, painful surrender of wisdom matters because it shows that even Wainamoinen's magic has limits, and that the deepest knowledge must be wrested from the dead.
