**First appearance:** 0002-i

## Snapshot

A boy of the Rudkus household sent to work in a lard factory, he carries childhood into the stockyards and comes home smelling of its grease.

## Who they are

He belongs to the crowded family whose survival depends on every pair of hands, even the smallest, and his wages are counted before he understands what they cost. The tension he embodies is simple and terrible: a child asked to be a breadwinner in a place that grinds children down. His presence in the early household scenes keeps the reader aware that the Rudkus gamble in Packingtown stakes not just the adults but the young.
