## Who they are

Buldeo holds court among the graybeards with stories of spirits and moneylenders reborn as beasts, and he expects the village boys to keep silent while their elders speak. Mowgli's blunt correction—that the tiger limps because he was born lame—leaves Buldeo speechless and vengeful, and the headman's suggestion that Mowgli go herding is the first step in the village's rejection of him. Buldeo's wounded pride and superstition make him a persistent adversary.
