# Big Toomai — The Jungle Book character guide

> Big Toomai in The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0007-toomai-of-the-elephants

## Snapshot

A veteran elephant driver whose hands know every command and whose heart belongs to the great beasts he works, even as the keddah's masters dismiss him.

## Who they are

Big Toomai has spent a lifetime among elephants, and he speaks of them with the authority of a man who has earned their trust rather than commanded it. The sahibs and overseers treat him as a tool, but his real allegiance is to the animals, and that loyalty shapes how he raises his son. He anchors the human side of the elephant stories, showing what it costs to love creatures that other men see only as labor.
