> Captain Pascal in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Capt . Pascal, my captain, my Captain

**First appearance:** 0004-ii

## Snapshot

The Royal Navy captain who takes Equiano to sea, teaches him the sailor's trade, and then sells him despite hopes of freedom.

## Who they are

Pascal is Equiano's first real master after the chaos of early captivity, the man who gives him a naval education and a name, Gustavus Vassa, that will stick to him for life. The bond is genuinely formative, which is exactly what makes his later betrayal so sharp: he sends Equiano ashore to be sold, letting another captain broker the deal. He matters because he teaches Equiano both the skills and the disillusionment that will fuel his long campaign to buy himself back.
