The Inspector General · Question

Who is the mayor in The Inspector General?

Answer

Anton Antonovich Skvoznik-Dmuhanovsky — the town mayor — is a petty tyrant who bullies subordinates and trembles before superiors. He first hears of the inspector, orchestrates the mistaken welcome of Khlestakov, and tries to marry his daughter Marya into influence. His vanity and fear drive the plot.

The mayor opens the play ordering fences whitewashed and streets cleaned — performance for authority. He embodies provincial power: loud locally, servile imaginatively toward capital. Gogol based types on real abuses; the mayor is every official who cares more about report cards than citizens.
