The Inspector General · Concept

Social climbing and ambition

Khlestakov inflates his rank; the mayor pushes his daughter — both sides perform status they lack.

Khlestakov claims friendship with Pushkin and ministerial access while Osip knows they owe the innkeeper. The mayor and Anna Andreyevna plot marriage into Petersburg society through the “inspector.” Marya Antonovna dreams of balls; Khlestakov proposes between snacks. Ambition makes both sides ridiculous yet sympathetic — everyone wants exit from provincial mud.

Social climbing satirizes class mobility under autocracy: only connections matter, not merit. Khlestakov’s wild lies succeed because officials already live by performance. Act III’s reception scenes are masterclasses in empty ceremony. Link to provincial vs. capital theme: Petersburg is imagined heaven; nobody has been there.
