# Young George — The Innocents Abroad character guide

> Young George in The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** young George, George, Fulbert, George W. Fulbert, himself

**First appearance:** 0005-iii

## Snapshot

A young traveler in the party whose name gets borrowed for the book's retelling of the Abelard and Heloise scandal, complete with seduction, secret marriage, and hired ruffians.

## Who they are

Young George moves through the tour as one of the narrator's young companions, but his real work in the text is as the vessel for a lurid medieval set piece: the letter boasting of Fulbert's simplicity, the stolen lessons, the secret marriage, the vengeance. The tale's Abelard is a cold-hearted villain who trades on hospitality, and Heloise a self-sacrificing fool for love, and the whole affair is narrated with mock-historical relish. He matters because he shows how the pilgrims' sightseeing keeps collapsing into anecdote — every ruin wants a scandal attached.
