# Mr. Blucher — The Innocents Abroad character guide

> Mr. Blucher in The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Blucher, Young Mr. Blucher, Blucher, himself

**First appearance:** 0006-iv

## Snapshot

The earnest young passenger whose eagerness to do everything correctly makes him the expedition's favorite target for practical jokes and mock-serious counsel.

## Who they are

Young Mr. Blucher travels with the sincere desire to be a proper member of a refined company, which is precisely what makes him useful to his shipmates' humor. He takes advice at face value, follows instructions too literally, and absorbs each prank with a gravity that only invites the next one. His function in the early going is to expose the group's pecking order: the tour advertises mutual friends and cultivated manners, and Blucher is where that fiction gets tested, gently and repeatedly.
