# Father Brown — The Innocence of Father Brown character guide > Father Brown in The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Father, Brown, little Father Brown, the unhappy Brown, the unmoved Brown, the priest, the little priest, the protesting priest, the little rustic priest, a mild, hardworking little priest **First appearance:** 0001-the-innocence-of-father-brown ## Snapshot A shabby little Catholic priest whose mild, blinking gaze reads souls rather than clues, and who senses evil in the shape of a crooked knife before anyone else does. ## Who they are Brown moves through grand houses and country lanes as an unassuming guest, easily overlooked beside the brilliant detective Flambeau and the fashionable people he investigates. His power lies in a humility that invites confidences and a theology that takes sin seriously: he calls an ornate Oriental dagger 'the wrong shape' and feels wickedness in a Turkey carpet, unnerving the cheerful Dr. Harris. Because he notices what the confident and the clever dismiss, he becomes the quiet conscience of each case, the one who sees the murderer in the optimist before the crime is even understood. ## Relationships ### [Flambeau](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/flambeau) _friendship_ Father Brown repeatedly reforms and befriends the master criminal Flambeau, guiding him toward redemption. ### [Colonel Pound](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/colonel_pound) _professional_ Colonel Pound, a police official, works alongside Father Brown in investigating crimes. ### [Prince Saradine](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/prince_saradine) _psychological_ Father Brown unravels the dark, manipulative secrets of the enigmatic Prince Saradine. ### [Wilfred Bohun](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/wilfred_bohun) _psychological_ Father Brown confronts the tormented clergyman Wilfred Bohun, who is driven to murder by religious obsession. ### [Mr. Paul](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/mr_paul) _professional_ Mr. Paul, a mysterious figure, interacts with Father Brown in the context of criminal investigations. ### [Leonard Quinton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/leonard_quinton) _professional_ Father Brown probes the death of the poet Leonard Quinton, linked to a bizarre crime. ### [Dr. Simon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/dr_simon) _professional_ Dr. Simon, a physician, aids Father Brown in understanding medical aspects of crimes. ### [Kalon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/kalon) _psychological_ Father Brown sees through the charismatic cult leader Kalon, exposing his manipulation. ### [Patrick Royce](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/patrick_royce) _friendship_ Father Brown befriends the honest sailor Patrick Royce, who becomes a key ally. ### [Flambeau](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/flambeau) _friendship_ Father Brown repeatedly reforms and befriends the master criminal Flambeau, guiding him toward redemption. ### [Flambeau](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/flambeau) _friendship_ Father Brown repeatedly reforms and befriends the master criminal Flambeau, guiding him toward redemption. ### [Colonel Pound](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/characters/colonel_pound) _professional_ Colonel Pound, a police official, works alongside Father Brown in investigating crimes. ## In the story ### [The Innocence of Father Brown](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-innocence-of-father-brown) The central figure, a humble priest whose apparent innocence belies his profound insight into crime and human nature. ### [The Blue Cross](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-blue-cross) The seemingly naive Essex priest who cleverly outwits Flambeau and saves the cross. ### [The Secret Garden](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-secret-garden) Observes quietly from the corner, asks about the cigar, and later reveals the truth about the murder. ### [The Queer Feet](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-queer-feet) The protagonist who deduces the crime by listening to footsteps and later confronts the thief, leading to his repentance. ### [The Flying Stars](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-flying-stars) Confronts Flambeau in the garden, reveals his knowledge of the crime, and persuades him to return the diamonds and reform. ### [The Invisible Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-invisible-man) Father Brown accompanies Flambeau and Angus, and solves the mystery by deducing the killer's disguise. ### [The Honour of Israel Gow](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_innocence_of_father_brown_se/chapters/the-honour-of-israel-gow) Arrives at Glengyle Castle to aid Flambeau;
