The Inheritors

The narrator meets an enigmatic woman near a cathedral and they walk together toward Dover. She claims to come from the 'Fourth Dimension,' describing a race of beings who are clear-sighted, practical, and devoid of ideals, ethics, or art. The narrator is both fascinated and disturbed by her calm, dispassionate explanations and her strange powers, which she demonstrates by causing a sleeping countryman to startle. The encounter leaves him shaken and questioning reality.

The narrator reflects on his encounter with the enigmatic woman, dismissing her as a trivial riddle and a symbol of a modern, superseding generation. He then visits the celebrated novelist Callan, who offers him a commission from Fox to write a series of personal articles on prominent figures, a job the narrator accepts despite his reservations.
