Concepts
Ideas that structure The Informer by Liam O’Flaherty — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Betrayal and Its Consequences
The central plot revolves around Gypo Nolan's betrayal of his former comrade Francis McPhillip for a monetary reward, leading to McPhillip's death and Gypo's subsequent psychological torment, social ostracism, and violent pursuit by the Revolutionary Organization.
Class Struggle and Poverty
The book vividly depicts the squalid conditions of Dublin's slums, the desperation of the working class, and the revolutionary fervor born from economic oppression, with characters like the dockers, laborers, and prostitutes embodying the harsh realities of poverty.
Violence and Revolution
The narrative is steeped in political violence, including murder, executions, and armed conflict, as the Revolutionary Organization enforces its code through brutal means, reflecting the turbulent period of Irish revolutionary struggle.
Guilt and Paranoia
Gypo's internal experience is dominated by intense guilt and paranoia after his betrayal, manifesting in his constant fear of being discovered, his erratic behavior, and his eventual psychological breakdown.
Loyalty and Comradeship
The Revolutionary Organization is built on a code of loyalty among its members, yet this loyalty is tested and often broken, as seen in Gypo's betrayal, the internal suspicions, and the ruthless pursuit of informers.
Fate and Inevitability
The characters seem trapped by their circumstances and past actions, with Gypo's doomed flight and the Organization's relentless pursuit suggesting an inescapable fate, reinforced by the bleak, deterministic atmosphere of the slums.
Gender and Exploitation
Women in the novel, such as Katie and Mary McPhillip, are often exploited, marginalized, or used as emotional pawns by men, reflecting their limited agency in a patriarchal society, yet they also display resilience and complex loyalties.
Identity and Otherness
Gypo's transformation from a comrade to an outcast 'informer' highlights how identity is socially constructed and violently enforced, with the label of informer stripping him of his humanity and marking him for destruction.
