> Peter Wain in The Incredulity of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Wain, Peter, young Wain, Captain Wain

**First appearance:** 0004-the-arrow-of-heaven

## Snapshot

A harassed young man with untidy yellow hair who narrates the Coptic Cup's bloody history to Father Brown with anxious urgency.

## Who they are

Wain is the nephew of Crake, Merton's business partner, and it is through his long, worried monologues that Father Brown first learns of the cup and the two deaths already attached to it. Haggard and impetuous, he carries the story's exposition on his shoulders while clearly fearing what it might mean for those he knows. His nervous energy and personal stake in the affair make him both a guide and a potential liability as the mystery deepens.
