**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Byrne, James Byrne

**First appearance:** 0002-the-incredulity-of-father-brown

## Snapshot

A man tied to the Wise family's affairs, whose knowledge of the dead man's world makes him both useful and suspect.

## Who they are

Mr. Byrne belongs to the web of business and family connections that surrounds Gideon Wise, close enough to the money to know how it moves. He carries the guarded manner of someone who has learned that what he says can be used against him, and his account of events is shaped by loyalties he does not fully display. As the investigation into Wise's death widens, Byrne's position between the family and the outside world makes him a figure Father Brown must weigh carefully.
