# Miss Darnaway — The Incredulity of Father Brown character guide

> Miss Darnaway in The Incredulity of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Darnaway, Adelaide Darnaway

**First appearance:** 0009-the-doom-of-the-darnaways

## Snapshot

Adelaide Darnaway, the lady of the ivied tower, dreams and drifts under the family doom, awaiting a colonial husband she has never met.

## Who they are

Miss Darnaway lives in the falling house of Darnaway, where the family contract and the Australian cousin are accepted as part of the Doom of the Darnaways. She does not think, the doctor says, so much as dream and drift; even a humpbacked, one-eyed, homicidal bridegroom would only seem to her a finishing touch to the twilight scenery. Her passive fatalism is the emotional centre of the story's early arc, making the arrival of the colonial cousin a test not just of fortune but of whether she can ever choose.
