# Jake Halket — The Incredulity of Father Brown character guide

> Jake Halket in The Incredulity of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Halket, Jake, that blasphemous blackguard Halket

**First appearance:** 0010-the-ghost-of-gideon-wise

## Snapshot

A blasphemous, hard-drinking blackguard whose open contempt for piety makes him a natural suspect and a useful mirror for the town's darker moods.

## Who they are

Halket is the kind of man whose reputation arrives before he does, a blasphemer and brawler whose name is spoken with a grimace. His hostility to religion and his rough manner set him at odds with the more respectable figures around the mystery, and his movements are watched with suspicion. Yet his bluntness also cuts through the polite evasions of others, making him a figure whose guilt or innocence matters less than what his presence reveals about the community's fault lines.
