> Jacob P. Stein in The Incredulity of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Stein, Jake, Mr. Jacob P. Stein, the blaspheming Jake

**First appearance:** 0010-the-ghost-of-gideon-wise

## Snapshot

A blaspheming figure remembered as 'the blaspheming Jake,' whose irreverence shadows the strange affair of the ghost of Gideon Wise.

## Who they are

Stein belongs to the hard, sceptical company of men who treat organised religion with conventional contempt, the sort of irreverence Father Brown meets without flinching. His nickname, 'the blaspheming Jake,' clings to him like a reputation he has earned and perhaps enjoys, setting him at odds with the pieties of those around him. In a tale built on a ghost, a man who mocks the sacred becomes a useful pressure point — someone whose scorn may hide fear, or something worse.
