## Who they are

Harry Payne moves among the people gathered around Gideon Wise's money and influence, close enough to be implicated and young enough to be overlooked. He is pulled between the practical demands of the world he lives in and the unsettling questions raised by Wise's death, and his unease makes him a useful barometer for what the others are hiding. His position near the center of the affair keeps him in the path of Father Brown's quiet questions.
