**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0009-the-doom-of-the-darnaways

## Snapshot

A wealthy, reticent magnate who owns the cursed Coptic Cup and has every reason to fear the letters signed Daniel Doom.

## Who they are

Merton is a big-business man whose fortune has drawn to him the Coptic Cup and, with it, a trail of threats and deaths stretching back through two previous owners. Reticent to the point of secrecy, he lets even his letters pass through a secretary's hands, keeping his fears close and his household guarded. His refusal to be frightened into retreat is precisely what makes him the story's central pressure point, as Father Brown is drawn into the question of whether the cup's curse is fate or design.
