## Who they are

Menelaus carries the war's original grievance, and when Paris proposes a duel for Helen and her wealth, he accepts with a fury that reveals how deeply the insult still burns. He is a capable fighter but also a man of softness, sparing a suppliant only to be rebuked by his brother. His personal stake gives the conflict its human center even as the armies grind on.
