While excavating the debris, Tonnison finds a damaged manuscript, which the narrator places in his satchel. They explore the area, encounter an eerie wailing sound from the woods, and feel a sense of dread. They return to their tent, and after supper, the narrator begins to read the manuscript aloud.
Chapter 5
II: The Plain of Silence
The narrator, an old recluse living in an ancient house with his dog Pepper and his sister, begins a diary to record strange occurrences. He describes a vision where he floats through space to a vast, desolate plain lit by a dull-red ring of fire. The chapter establishes his isolation, the house's eerie reputation, and his first supernatural experience involving candle flames turning green and red, leading to a vision of the plain.
