Chapter 1

Chapter 2
Bimala’s Story XXIII
Bimala prepares to leave for Calcutta with Nikhil, but Sandip returns to return the stolen sovereigns and jewels, claiming he cannot take anything from her. Chandranath Babu arrives with news of a Muslim uprising and violence against women, prompting Nikhil to ride out unarmed to quell the disturbance. Bimala is left in anguish, and the chapter ends with Nikhil being brought back wounded and Amulya dead.

He contemplates the nature of love, self-worth, and the eternal versus the transient, finding solace in the idea of an eternal love beyond the material world. His sister-in-law interrupts his late-night brooding, urging him to rest.
