# How does The History of Henry Esmond develop the theme of Love and Duty?

> The History of Henry Esmond by William Makepeace Thackeray

## Answer

The History of Henry Esmond by William Makepeace Thackeray develops Love and Duty across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Esmond's lifelong devotion to Lady Castlewood and her family is marked by a conflict between personal love and a sense of duty, culminating in his self-sacrifice and renunciation of his own claims for the sake of those he loves.

Isabel's marriage to Thomas is driven by duty and the desire for an heir rather than love, while Frank Esmond's rejection of Isabel for a more suitable match reflects the tension between personal inclination and social obligation.

Lady Castlewood's devotion to her husband borders on worship, yet her jealousy and his growing indifference reveal the tension between love and marital duty.

Henry Esmond's devotion to Lady Castlewood is tested by her illness and his guilt over causing it, while she worries about her husband's love.
