The celebrated essayist and politician whose quiet brilliance and sober virtue offer Henry Esmond a model of worth earned rather than inherited.

## Who they are

Addison moves between the coffeehouses, the Kit-Cat Club, and the corridors of power, admired for his Latin verse and his Spectator essays. Where Steele is all warmth and impulse, Addison is cool, reserved, and watchful, and his friendship with the Esmond circle draws Henry into the literary and political world of Queen Anne's London. He matters as the novel's emblem of merit and moderation in an age of faction and intrigue.
