## Snapshot

The acid-tongued dowager of Castlewood, whose deathbed revelations about Henry's birth and her own tangled marriages upend everything the family believed.

## Who they are

Sharp, self-pitying, and fiercely proud of her Jacobite loyalties, the old Marchioness of Esmond nurses old grievances against the Castlewoods who displaced her. Her long-hoarded secret — that Henry is in fact the rightful heir — is delivered with spite and triumph rather than tenderness. Her confession rewrites Henry's place in the family and sets the moral stakes of the entire novel in motion.
