A walk is disrupted by the cruel hanging of a puppy by boys and a little girl's search for her lost dog, driving him to seek escape from humanity.

Lucian continues his visits to Caermaen, studying Roman ruins and artifacts to fuel his imaginative world. He develops a method to mentally transform annoying people into insignificant forms, and retreats into a sensory garden of Avallaunius, where he explores the transmutation of sensations. His love for Annie inspires his quest for exquisite experiences, and he witnesses fantastical performances in the amphitheater.
