Chapter 1
Mainly About Fenn
The chapter introduces Fenn, the star cricketer of Kay's house, who is deeply unhappy with his house master Mr. Kay's constant interference. As the final house cricket match against Blackburn's approaches, Fenn's exceptional all-round abilities have single-handedly carried his weak team to the brink of victory. The Blackburn's prefects, led by Jimmy Silver and Kennedy, discuss the match and Fenn's talent while Kennedy reflects on his own dogged persistence in bowling Fenn out. The chapter establishes Fenn's frustration with Kay's oppressive management and sets up the tension between individual brilliance and team dynamics.
Chapter 2
An Evening at Kay's
Kennedy and Fenn discuss Fenn's difficult relationship with his housemaster, Mr. Kay, who is fussy and unsupportive. Mr. Kay confronts them outside, ordering them indoors. Fenn later tries to quiet the fags' room celebration, but Mr. Kay arrives, punishes the boys, and publicly humiliates Fenn. Fenn confronts Mr. Kay but is silenced and feels he has made a fool of himself.
Chapter 3
III: The Final House-Match
The final house-match between Kay's and Blackburn's reaches its climax. Blackburn's needs to dismiss Kay's for 79 runs to win, but Fenn is delayed due to a row with Mr. Kay and arrives late. Despite a disastrous start for Kay's, Fenn stages a remarkable last-wicket partnership, nearly winning the match single-handedly. However, a critical miscount of balls forces his weaker partner to face Kennedy, resulting in a dismissal that gives Blackburn's a seven-run victory.
Chapter 4
Harmony and Discord
After the final house-match defeat, tensions between Kay's and Blackburn's houses erupt into a fight among juniors. Fenn reveals he was punished by Kay for rudeness, causing him to miss the match. At the school concert, Fenn's encore performance of a ragtime tune incites the gallery into a riotous uproar, effectively ending the concert and setting the stage for disciplinary consequences.
Chapter 5
Camp
Kennedy and the Eckleton contingent arrive at camp, where Kennedy observes the rowdy Kay's house members and discusses potential ragging with Jimmy Silver. The chapter also includes a flashback to the end of term, the prize-giving, and a brief conversation with Fenn about the concert incident.
