# How does The Haunted Hotel develop the theme of Love and Betrayal?

> The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins

## Answer

The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins develops Love and Betrayal across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Central to the story is the betrayal of Agnes by Montbarry, who breaks his engagement to marry another, and the subsequent emotional turmoil, contrasting genuine affection with selfish ambition.

Lord Montbarry's desertion of Agnes Lockwood for the Countess is seen as a betrayal, and the family views the marriage as a delusion.

Agnes burns Montbarry's letters on his wedding day, symbolizing the end of their relationship; Henry's anger reflects the betrayal.

Henry's unrequited love for Agnes is central, as he pleads for her affection while she gently refuses, still haunted by her past with Lord Montbarry.
