The story begins with Lord Montbarry breaking his engagement to Agnes Lockwood to marry the enigmatic Countess Narona, a woman with a scandalous past. Years later, Agnes travels to Venice and stays at the Palace Hotel, where she experiences terrifying supernatural phenomena in Room 13A. The Countess, now mentally unstable, confesses her crimes through a play manuscript that reveals a murder conspiracy involving her lover, the Baron, and a courier named Ferrari. Henry Westwick, Lord Montbarry's brother, investigates and discovers a hidden cavity beneath the hearthstone containing a severed head, later identified as Lord Montbarry's through his false teeth. The Countess dies of fright after her confession is exposed. Agnes and Henry marry, and the haunted hotel's secrets are laid to rest, though the supernatural events suggest a moral order where guilt brings its own punishment.
