# Helen Mifflin — The Haunted Bookshop character guide > Helen Mifflin in The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Helen, Mrs. Mifflin **First appearance:** 0001-the-haunted-bookshop ## Snapshot Roger's wife and the shop's steady hand, she keeps the books, the household, and her husband's more eccentric schemes from tipping over. ## Who they are Helen Mifflin runs the practical side of the Haunted Bookshop while Roger lectures customers and rearranges the shelves according to his latest theory of book morality. She is amused by his schemes, including his campaign to decorate Titania's room with portraits of dead authors so the girl will disdain modern suitors, but she is also the one who notices what is actually happening in the shop. Her quiet competence and dry humor give the book its domestic footing, and her presence makes Roger's eccentricities feel like a life rather than a pose. ## Relationships ### [Roger Mifflin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/roger_mifflin) _family_ Helen is Roger's devoted wife, sharing his love for books and supporting his eccentric bookshop ventures. ### [Aubrey Gilbert](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/aubrey_gilbert) _friendship_ Aubrey and Helen share a warm, cordial friendship, with Helen often acting as a confidante and ally. ### [Titania Chapman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/titania_chapman) _family_ Helen treats Titania like a daughter, offering maternal care and guidance within the bookshop household. ### [Roger Mifflin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/roger_mifflin) _family_ Helen is Roger's devoted wife, sharing his love for books and supporting his eccentric bookshop ventures. ### [Aubrey Gilbert](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/aubrey_gilbert) _friendship_ Aubrey and Helen share a warm, cordial friendship, with Helen often acting as a confidante and ally. ### [Roger Mifflin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/roger_mifflin) _family_ Helen is Roger's devoted wife, sharing his love for books and supporting his eccentric bookshop ventures. ### [Titania Chapman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/titania_chapman) _family_ Helen treats Titania like a daughter, offering maternal care and guidance within the bookshop household. ### [Aubrey Gilbert](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/aubrey_gilbert) _friendship_ Aubrey and Helen share a warm, cordial friendship, with Helen often acting as a confidante and ally. ### [Titania Chapman](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/titania_chapman) _family_ Helen treats Titania like a daughter, offering maternal care and guidance within the bookshop household. ## In the story ### [The Corn Cob Club](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/ii-the-corn-cob-club) Mentioned as having made the chocolate cake and minding the shop during the gathering. ### [III: Titania Arrives](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/iii-titania-arrives) Interacts briefly with Roger, comments on the Archy poem, and goes out to market. ### [IV: The Disappearing Volume](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/iv-the-disappearing-volume) Teases Roger about his reading habits and helps with dishes while minding the shop. ### [VI: Titania Learns the Business](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/vi-titania-learns-the-business) Appears briefly in the morning, refusing to let Titania help with breakfast, and is described as fresh and hearty. ### [Aubrey Goes to the Movies, and Wishes He Knew More German](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/viii-aubrey-goes-to-the-movies-and-wishes-he-knew-more-german) Accompanies Titania to the movies, invites Aubrey to join them, later makes cocoa. ### [IX: Again the Narrative Is Retarded](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/ix-again-the-narrative-is-retarded) Mentioned as having gone to bed after evening cocoa. ### [Roger Raids the Icebox](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/x-roger-raids-the-icebox) Returns from the movies with Titania, prepares cocoa, and discusses Roger's icebox habits. ### [XI: Titania Tries Reading in Bed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/xi-titania-tries-reading-in-bed) Mentioned as accompanying Roger Mifflin to visit Mr. Chapman. ### [Aubrey Determines to Give Service That’s Different](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/xii-aubrey-determines-to-give-service-that-s-different) Mentioned as having returned home safely with Roger and Titania. ### [XIV: The Cromwell Makes Its Last Appearance](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/xiv-the-cromwell-makes-its-last-appearance) Helen is present at the back of the shop during the explosion and is distraught about Roger's safety. ### [Mr. Chapman Waves His Wand](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/chapters/xv-mr-chapman-waves-his-wand) Present during the dinner and shares a sly smile with Titania. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters/helen_mifflin - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_haunted_bookshop_se/characters
