The play opens in the forecastle of a transatlantic ocean liner, where Yank, a brutish and proud stoker, dominates his fellow workers. He is confronted by Paddy, an old Irishman who romanticizes the past, and Long, a cynical socialist. Yank's sense of power and belonging is shattered when Mildred Douglas, a wealthy young woman, visits the stokehole and recoils in horror at his appearance, calling him a 'hairy ape.' This insult triggers Yank's crisis of identity and sets him on a path of rage and revenge, leading him to Fifth Avenue, where he is arrested, imprisoned, and eventually seeks meaning through the I.W.W. and a final, fatal encounter with a gorilla at the zoo.
