# Middleton — The Great Impersonation character guide

> Middleton in The Great Impersonation by E. Phillips Oppenheim.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Middleton, the faithful Middleton

**First appearance:** 0001-ii

## Snapshot

The faithful Middleton has served Dominey Hall through its long decline, and his quiet competence is the first test any returning master must pass.

## Who they are

Middleton is the butler who kept the house standing through years of absence and rumour, loyal to the name of Dominey even when there was no Dominey to serve. His knowledge of the family's habits, its cellars, and its servants makes him both an asset and a hazard to a man claiming to be Sir Everard after a decade in Africa. Every order he receives is measured against memory, and his unspoken judgments carry more weight in the household than any lawyer's assurances.
