## Who they are

Newt is the weak link in a criminal chain that cannot afford one — he has been with Ducroy and Jacobs from the start, which means he knows too much to abandon and too little to trust. Ducroy sneers at his cowardice while depending on his silence, and the Hardy boys recognize that Newt's fear is the crack through which the whole conspiracy might split. His nervous loitering outside the grocery store becomes a small but telling signal of a plan coming apart.
