> Mr. Smuff in The Great Airport Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Smuff, Detective Smuff

**First appearance:** 0005-vi-the-cabin-in-the-woods

## Snapshot

A pompous Bayport detective whose rigid obedience to orders makes him the Hardy boys' most grating escort through their wrongful arrest.

## Who they are

Smuff is the kind of official who mistakes procedure for competence, glowering at jokes and reminding everyone that his job is secure. He arrives at the boathouse to haul Frank and Joe before Chief Collig, unmoved by their confusion and uncurious about the case himself. His smug certainty that he is merely doing his duty sharpens the boys' frustration and underscores how thin the evidence against them really is.
