# Hurd Applegate — The Great Airport Mystery character guide

> Hurd Applegate in The Great Airport Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hurd, Mr. Applegate

**First appearance:** 0002-iii-a-promise-of-trouble

## Snapshot

A blunt, self-assured Bayport businessman who stakes his reputation — and his bail money — on the Hardy boys' innocence.

## Who they are

Applegate belongs to the circle of influential townsmen who rally behind Fenton Hardy's sons when the postal charges threaten to bury them. His confidence is loud and unapologetic: he declares the arrest ridiculous and insists he can spot a crook on sight, a boast that doubles as a wager on the boys' character. By helping post bail, he keeps Frank and Joe free to chase the real thieves, making his certainty a practical lifeline in the story's back half.
