Fenton Hardy works from his study, putting aside papers to hear his sons' account of the crash and later naming Pipps and Jacobs as a bad gang. He supplies the crucial tip that the pair use the Raven Roadhouse as headquarters, then cautions the boys not to give themselves away. His guidance gives the investigation its direction even as he lets Frank and Joe run it themselves.
