## Who they are

Essarès Bey is the power behind the Rue Lafayette bank and the house where seventeen hundred bags of gold are said to be buried, a man whose brain retains the impression of great and imminent danger. He is Coralie's husband, which makes Patrice's devotion to her a trespass as well as a rescue, and the leader's taunt that he loves her passionately sharpens every scene he occupies. The pendant, the album, and the blotted words 'golden triangle' all pass through his hands, making him the still point around which the early investigation turns.
