## Who they are

Thrasillus is Lepolemus's companion on the hunt and the architect of his death, severing the horse's legs and driving a spear through his friend's thigh so the wound will read as a tusk. He performs mourning flawlessly except for the tears, and his real appetite is Charites, whom he demands in marriage while she is still tearing her garments. His impatience and his confidence that a grieving widow can be managed drive the middle of the tale toward its reckoning.
