Chapter 1
The Fifteenth Place
After the first match of the Easter term, the first fifteen team discusses the poor performance of Rand-Brown, the new wing three-quarter. Trevor, the captain, considers replacing him with Barry, a smaller but more reliable player, as the school prepares for the crucial Ripton match.
Chapter 2
The Gold Bat
Trevor, captain of the school football team, seeks to retrieve his gold bat from O'Hara, who borrowed it during the holidays. The chapter explores Trevor's energetic leadership, the disorganized state of Dexter's house, and the history of the gold bat as a trophy for the house cricket cup.
Chapter 3
III: The Mayor’s Statue
O'Hara visits Trevor's study for tea and recounts his recent exploits, including a clever rag on the French master and a nighttime adventure with Moriarty to tar-and-leaf the statue of Sir Eustace Briggs, the Mayor of Wrykyn. During the visit, O'Hara realizes he has lost the gold bat entrusted to him by Trevor, likely near the statue.
Chapter 4
The League's Warning
Barry discovers he has been selected for the first fifteen, surpassing Rand-Brown. He trains enthusiastically with McTodd and Drummond. Meanwhile, Clowes informs Trevor that the League, a secret society thought to be defunct, has been revived after Mill's study is wrecked and a card is found. Trevor receives a printed letter from the League's President demanding that Barry be removed from the team.
Chapter 5
Mill Receives Visitors
Trevor investigates the threatening letter he received, suspecting Clowes of sending it as a joke, but Clowes takes it seriously and warns him about the League. Meanwhile, the wrecking of Mill's study becomes the talk of Seymour's house, with students visiting to see the damage. Mill, annoyed by the attention, punishes young Renford for intruding. Barry's friend Drummond describes the destruction, and Rand-Brown's arrival creates tension as he taunts Barry about being selected for the first fifteen.
