Chapter 1
Part I: Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon

Chapter 2
A Captain of the Woods
The chapter introduces Torres, a former slave hunter and captain of the woods, who is deciphering a cryptogram that holds a secret about a rich man's honor and life. He plans to use the document to extort money from the man, who lives nearby with his family. Torres falls asleep after drinking and smoking.
Chapter 3
Robber and Robbed
Torres, sleeping under a tree, is robbed of his metal case by a guariba monkey. He chases the monkey through the forest in vain until two hunters, Benito and Manoel, shoot the monkey dead, recovering the case and returning it to Torres.
Chapter 4
The Garral Family
This chapter recounts the history of Joam Garral, who was rescued from starvation by the Portuguese farmer Magalhães and eventually became his partner and son-in-law, marrying his daughter Yaquita. It describes the growth of the fazenda at Iquitos, the birth of their children Benito and Minha, Benito's education in Belém and his friendship with Manoel Valdez, and the character and quiet sadness of Joam Garral, as well as the devoted staff including the old nurse Cybele.
Chapter 5
IV: Hesitation
Yaquita Garral approaches her husband Joam about their daughter Minha's marriage to Manoel Valdez. She proposes that the wedding take place in Belém so that Minha can meet her future mother-in-law, Madame Valdez. Joam initially hesitates, revealing a deep-seated reluctance to leave the fazenda, but ultimately consents to the journey. The chapter highlights the family's excitement and Joam's internal conflict.
