Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor, returns to the German spa town of Roulettenberg to find the General's household in turmoil, awaiting the death of the wealthy Grandmother. He is hopelessly in love with the General's stepdaughter, Polina, who manipulates him with cold contempt. When the Grandmother unexpectedly arrives and proceeds to gamble away her fortune at roulette, the family's schemes collapse. Alexei, driven by obsession, wins a vast sum but loses it all through reckless gambling and a degrading affair with the mercenary Mlle. Blanche. He descends into full-blown addiction, squandering his winnings and his dignity. In the end, abandoned and penniless, he encounters the Englishman Mr. Astley, who reveals that Polina still loves him but considers him lost. Alexei, however, remains fixated on the roulette table, planning to gamble again the next day.
