Chapter 4
II: The Hudson’s Bay Fur Company
Captain Craventy explains to Mrs. Paulina Barnett the history and current challenges of the Hudson's Bay Company, including its rivalry with the Northwest Company, the decline in fur exports due to overhunting, and the political pressures that have reduced its territory. He reveals the Company's plan to establish a northern fort on the Arctic coast to access a potential Northwest Passage. The chapter ends with a festive punch ceremony interrupted by mysterious cries from outside.
Chapter 5
A Savant Thawed
Thomas Black, an astronomer from the Greenwich Observatory, arrives at Fort Reliance in a frozen state during a blizzard. He is revived by vigorous snow friction and warm punch. Black explains his mission: to observe the total solar eclipse of July 18, 1860, in the Arctic, hoping to study the sun's corona and red prominences. He joins Lieutenant Hobson's expedition to the northern coast.
