# Winifred Dartie — The Forsyte Saga character guide > Winifred Dartie in The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Winifred, Dartie, Winifred Dartie, dear Winifred, Aunt Winifred **First appearance:** 0006-part-i-i-at-home-at-old-jolyon-s ## Snapshot James's daughter and Soames's sister, well-tailored and self-contained, who has spent twenty-one years being married to Montague Dartie and knows exactly what that costs. ## Who they are Winifred was founded well — the furniture chosen by Soames, the marriage arranged with the family's approval — and she has held her position with a plucky, fashionable composure through two decades of her husband's plausible ruin. When Dartie's conduct finally crosses the line, she does not collapse; she crumples a letter, takes a sniff from a gold-topped bottle, and consults her brother as lawyer and ally. Her parallel predicament to Soames's own makes her the quiet mirror of the novel's central question: what does a Forsyte do when the property is a person? ## Relationships ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _family_ A supportive sibling bond where Soames acts as Winifred's protector and advisor during her troubled marriage to Montague Dartie. ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _family_ A supportive sibling bond where Soames acts as Winifred's protector and advisor during her troubled marriage to Montague Dartie. ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _family_ A supportive sibling bond where Soames acts as Winifred's protector and advisor during her troubled marriage to Montague Dartie. ## In the story ### [Old Jolyon at the Zoo](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-vi-old-jolyon-at-the-zoo) Rides in the barouche with James, Rachel, and Dartie, her parasol shielding her as they pass. ### [Afternoon at Timothy's](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-vii-afternoon-at-timothy-s) Among the visitors in the drawing-room at Timothy's. ### [Dance at Roger's](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-viii-dance-at-roger-s) Attends without her husband Dartie, who was left behind due to previous drunkenness. ### [Evening at Richmond](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-ix-evening-at-richmond) Winifred organizes the Richmond dinner party and defends Irene's behavior, but later witnesses the emotional scene in the cab. ### [I: Mrs. Macander’s Evidence](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-iii-i-mrs-macander-s-evidence) Present at Timothy's dinner when Mrs. MacAnder reveals her sighting;
