# Philip Bosinney — The Forsyte Saga character guide > Philip Bosinney in The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Bosinney, Phil, Mr. Philip Bosinney, young Bosinney, Philip Baynes Bosinney, this Bosinney **First appearance:** 0009-part-i-iv-projection-of-the-house ## Snapshot A Byronic young architect with a knapsack, a private annuity, and no method, engaged to June Forsyte while designing the house that will undo them all. ## Who they are Bosinney enters the Forsyte orbit as June's fiancé and the architect of Soames's new house at Robin Hill — a position that places him at the exact intersection of family money, family pride, and family suspicion. His uncle calls him clever but feckless, one of those men who sleep all day and work all night, with a streak of his eccentric father's Byronism and not an ounce of vice. The Forsytes tolerate him because he might steady down; the tragedy is that his imagination, which they cannot value, is precisely what makes him dangerous. ## Relationships ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _rivalry_ A bitter professional and personal rivalry as Bosinney, the architect hired by Soames, becomes Irene's lover. ### [June Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/june_forsyte) _romantic_ A brief engagement that ends bitterly when Bosinney falls in love with Irene, leaving June heartbroken. ### [Irene Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/irene_forsyte) _romantic_ A passionate, illicit love affair that defies societal norms and leads to tragedy. ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _rivalry_ A bitter professional and personal rivalry as Bosinney, the architect hired by Soames, becomes Irene's lover. ### [Soames Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/soames_forsyte) _rivalry_ A bitter professional and personal rivalry as Bosinney, the architect hired by Soames, becomes Irene's lover. ### [June Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/june_forsyte) _romantic_ A brief engagement that ends bitterly when Bosinney falls in love with Irene, leaving June heartbroken. ### [Irene Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/irene_forsyte) _romantic_ A passionate, illicit love affair that defies societal norms and leads to tragedy. ### [Irene Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/irene_forsyte) _romantic_ A passionate, illicit love affair that defies societal norms and leads to tragedy. ### [June Forsyte](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/characters/june_forsyte) _romantic_ A brief engagement that ends bitterly when Bosinney falls in love with Irene, leaving June heartbroken. ## In the story ### [The Forsyte Saga](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/the-forsyte-saga) The architect and fiancé of June, introduced as an outsider to the Forsyte clan. ### [Book I: The Man of Property](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/book-i-the-man-of-property) An architect engaged to June Forsyte; commissioned by Soames to build a country house, he becomes a catalyst for conflict. ### [I: “At Home” at Old Jolyon’s](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-i-at-home-at-old-jolyon-s) The young man engaged to June; criticized by James for having no business, no income, and no connection. ### [Old Jolyon Goes to the Opera](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-ii-old-jolyon-goes-to-the-opera) June's fiancé; described as a harum-scarum, unpractical man with no money. ### [Dinner at Swithin's](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-iii-dinner-at-swithin-s) The fiancé, seated between Irene and June, an outsider to the Forsyte circle. ### [Projection of the House](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-iv-projection-of-the-house) Bosinney is hired by Soames to design the Robin Hill house.
