Raised alongside her brother Jolly under their father's whimsical, brotherly detachment, she learns early to watch rather than declare. Her softness and clear sight make her a counterweight to the Forsyte instinct for possession, and her later attachment to Val Dartie pulls the family's next generation into the old feud. ## In the story ### [Old Jolyon's Peccadillo](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-vii-old-jolyon-s-peccadillo) Sits on Old Jolyon's knee and plays with his watch during the visit. ### [Old Jolyon at the Zoo](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-vi-old-jolyon-at-the-zoo) Holds her grandfather's hand and later gets tired, being petted by Old Jolyon. ### [II](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/ii) Mentioned as walking and talking with Old Jolyon during the rainy days. ### [Old Jolyon's Bequest](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/iii) Greets Irene upon her arrival and shares a kiss with her; plays with the dog Balthasar under the oak tree. ### [IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/iv) Greets Old Jolyon at the station with the dog Balthasar. ### [V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/v) Old Jolyon's granddaughter, who takes music lessons from Irene and is aware of the 'lady in grey,' showing a child's perceptiveness about the situation. ### [No-Longer-Young Jolyon at Home](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-vi-no-longer-young-jolyon-at-home) Jolyon's younger daughter, now eighteen, being painted by her father; described as shy and affectionate. ### [The Colt and the Filly](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-vii-the-colt-and-the-filly) Shy but warm, shows Val the stables and bonds over a shared love of horses and adventure. ### [Val Hears the News](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-ix-val-hears-the-news) Rides with Val at Robin Hill; her shy face and eyes linger in Val's memory, influencing his decisions. ### [Jolyon Finds Out Where He Is](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-xiii-jolyon-finds-out-where-he-is) Briefly seen riding into the yard; Jolyon notes she has been silent lately. ### [I: The Third Generation](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-i-the-third-generation) Jolly's sister, who feels a soft attraction to Val and wishes Jolly would like him better. ### [Jolly Sits in Judgment](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-v-jolly-sits-in-judgment) Defends her secret rides with Val against Jolly's accusations, angered by her brother's interference. ### [The Challenge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-ii-viii-the-challenge) Accepts Val's proposal, is distressed by the challenge but proud of Val's decision. ### [Richmond Park](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-iii-iii-richmond-park) Reveals her engagement to Val Dartie and her wish to go to South Africa; departs with June. ### [Over the River](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-iii-iv-over-the-river) Appears in Jolly's feverish memory as a cricket companion, with Jolly recalling her poor bowling. ### [Out of the Web](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-iii-ix-out-of-the-web) Jolyon's daughter; marries Val Dartie, creating a new link between the estranged branches of the family. ### [At Robin Hill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-iii-at-robin-hill) Married to Val Dartie; Jolyon writes to her about Jon's farming apprenticeship and asks her to be discreet about family history. ### [The Native Heath](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-v-the-native-heath) Val's wife, mentioned as sensible and having a nice face; she drives Val to the station. ### [Jon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-vi-jon) Holly, recently returned from South Africa, reconnects with her half-brother Jon and observes his character with maternal affection and concern. ### [VII: Fleur](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_forsyte_saga_se/chapters/part-i-vii-fleur) Holly is Jon's sister and Val's wife.
