# Hester Forsyte — The Forsyte Saga character guide

> Hester Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hester, Aunt Hester, dear Hester, Miss Hester

**First appearance:** 0006-part-i-i-at-home-at-old-jolyon-s

## Snapshot

Timothy's quieter spinster sister, a subdued presence in the green drawing-room whose silences register what the family's louder gossips prefer not to say.

## Who they are

Hester shares the sheltered, unchanging household of Timothy and Juley, where the days pass among effigies and knitting and the family's rituals of attendance. Where Juley chatters, Hester absorbs, and her restraint gives the Forsyte drawing-room its undertone of things felt but not spoken. She is part of the chorus of aunts whose collective weight defines what respectability costs, and whose long lives measure how slowly this family lets anything change.
