Francie occupies an awkward place in the clan, drawn to beauty and feeling in a family that measures everything in pounds and possessions. Her bohemian leanings and romantic sympathies set her at odds with the Forsyte instinct for safety and appearance, making her a quiet dissenter at gatherings where conformity is the price of belonging. She matters because she shows that the family's grip is not total, and that some Forsytes would rather be interesting than secure.
